Ray Gallery is pleased to present Fight of Fly, a solo show by Lucía Reissig on view from June 6 through July 1, 2016 hosting an opening reception on June 9, from 6– 8 PM. Lucía Reissig is an interdisciplinary artist, working within and outside the border cultures from Buenos Aires, Argentina to New York City.
It was a couple of years ago, on a cool summer night that I met Lucía. The street lights of El Barrio guided our conversation through an evening of tacos and a shared pastry. Through our stories and shared experiences Lucía was peeling back layers that identified her as an immigrant woman walking on the footsteps of many more here in New York City. Simultaneously personal and universal, she strives to understand the human response known as fight-or-flight. Chiefly through migration and embodied experiences of womanhood, and in the rituals of packing and relocating there are undertones of trauma. With each encounter one is confronted with a pendulum - to fight or to flee? What reactions may be are threaded together by works such as Familia de origen(2016). The preciousness of action become more apparent we see what can be done or undone in a given situation. The works presented by Lucía are a series of reactions and inactions to personal experiences that ultimately reflect on a transcendent grapple with identity.
